| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Sawyer River trail is in excellent condition. We did cut out one messy fir blowdown heading on the old road bed towards Hancock Notch. The Cedar Brook side of Hancock Notch is in great shape, the Sawyer River road side at it ascends the notch turns into a mess of threaded trails and mud pits until the old road bed appears. There are many attempts at reroutes around the worse spots but they are easy to miss the turnoffs as the original routes are not brushed in. The recent long section of sidehill is impressive but there is one washout of the trailbed in this area, that will be hard to fixas its steep slope. Considering that the Hancock Notch Trail is not in wilderness area, the Sawyer River side desperately needs a lot of blazing. |

| Comments: |
The washouts and erosion along the stream beds at the end of Sawyer River road are quite impressive. I realize and appreciate that there was lot of attention paid to Hancock Notch trail of late but the upper east side of Notch should be regarded as a very wild but wet and muddy experience. Hard to get totally lost as the trail follows the drainage but its really easy to get sucked into an old route of the trail. Barring installation of lot of puncheons It would be hard to get a good route through this section that will not be wet and muddy. |
