Trails
Trails: Garfield Trail, Garfield Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, July 15, 2018
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Lot was full when we arrived at 9:30, and a few cars were along the dirt road on either side of the parking lot. Lot was about half full when we got back at around 4:30.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Only two, in the lower part of the trail. Both easy rock-hops.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Well-maintained. A few blowdowns in the lower part of the trail, but none were an obstacle to travel. Most of the waterbars seemed to be working well. Minimal mud or standing water on the trail.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw a bunch. Nothing about the trail itself should deter them, although there's not that much water on the upper part. However, if your dog is rebellious and/or likes to get into fights with other dogs or people, then you need to keep it on a leash at all times. At the summit, we saw a dog (named "Hunter") repeatedly ignore its owner's commands to follow them, and instead it got into a fight with another (larger) dog that had just arrived at the summit. "Hunter" is precisely the sort of dog that should be leashed at all times in public places, including hiking trails.
Bugs
Bugs: Not too bad. The bugs mostly ignored me, but a couple deerflies and horseflies annoyed my hiking partner at a few points during the hike.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nada.

Comments
Comments: Fun hike! For the first few (very mellow) miles, I was concerned that the hike would be a slog through constant hot and humid temperatures with no breeze to cool down. However, as we got higher, the temperature slowly dropped, and there was a nice breeze at the summit that cooled us down. Views were excellent despite the overcast skies in the morning - we could see Lafayette and the Twins clearly, and we could see all the way out to the Tripyramids, Passaconaway, and Carrigain. The Garfield Trail was its usual mellow, gradual self, and even the short, steep section of the Garfield Ridge Trail wasn't too bad. Most of the rocks were wet in the morning due to the rain on Saturday, but they had mostly dried out by the afternoon. Thanks so much Jim for joining me!
