Willey Station trailhead to Mt Willey is about a 3000'elev. gain with the last 1/2 mile about 1600'elev gain and strenuous. The stair sections, about 10, are a piece of work. hats off to those that built them. On returning to the bottom spotted a black bear, around 100lbs, about 500' up from the Ripley Falls cutout. I had stopped for a break and noticed a dark shadow about 100' off to the side of the trail. Bear was grazing in my direction and had not noticed me. I looked all around to make sure the bear was alone and I banged my trekking poles together gently and started down the trail. He stopped and went in another direction. I let some others on the trail heading up know about the bear. Great day for hike |
