This trail report is to inform hikers that there are NO ice problems on North Moat trail at this time. The recent snow, rain and cold temps have created a crunchy adherent snow layer over the underlying ice flows.
The trail from parking lot to Attitash trail sign post is well packed two snowshoe wide path. This continues up the ridge for the first half mile. The footing then changes to a series of right left snowshoe footprints as travelers chose to follow in the footsteps of others. Easy enough to do the same. The "footsteps" make "stair steps" on the steepest sections for easy up and controlled down - no unplanned butt slides.
Once above the spruce trees near the summit there is a mix of hard ice, bare rock and crunchy snow. Care needed for the last few hundred feet to summit.
With warming temps recommend bring snowshoes for last 1 1/2 mile of trail. This part of the trail is not well packed yet.
