Comments
Comments: Len and I left the house at 4:15 and got a rather late start (8:45) due to snow plows and cautious drivers on the way up. 19 Mile Brook was lightly packed with at least one bare booter to Carter Dome Tr. We were first that morning up 19 Mile Brook to the Carter Notch and up to Carter Dome. We were on the limit of traction on the steep sections from the Notch to the Dome with our MSR snowshoes and considered switching to crampons but pushed through to the summit where we met up with a pair who had done the reverse and were grateful for having a packed trail down to the Notch as were we. Gusty winds and drifts at the summit. Three bare booted hikers behind the pair made the trail more difficult than it should have been for a descent. Light rain started falling on the descent and the snow was getting heavy and clinging to our pole baskets. We switched to bare boots from the Carter Dome/19 Mile Brook junction to the car as the trail was well packed. We encountered the pair we met at the summit who said they had a sketchy descent to the Notch from the Dome. It was arduous on the ascent from the Notch to the dome but otherwise a nice easy loop.
