Comments
Comments: Group of 3 started hours before us and their tracks were totally covered from new snowfall. Weather report accurately predicted SW winds of 20mph, but thankfully only experienced significant winds on the saddle, after passing Scaur Ridge Tr before heading up the steep incline to No Tripyramid summit, and on the summit of Middle Tripyramid because the trail was on the leeward side and in trees most of the way. Approx. 3-5" of new snow was enough to cover and pack over 99% of the ice. Glad we did not try x-cross skis on lower Pine Bend because of approx ~8 stream crossings on that lower section would have made this option frustrating unless there was 2-3' of packed snow cover. Microspikes were sufficient. Crampons would have added extra traction on 2 steep areas, but not necessary thanks to new snowfall covering the ice. Walking out, after the steep section just below the Scaur Ridge Tr cutoff, snowshoes would have given added stabilization on the uneven, frozen, foot tracks, but these conditions decreased as the trail flattened out. If you're bagging 4000'ers, these peaks are good on poor to low visibility days, since there are few vistas on the mostly tree-covered summits. Lovely terrain of mixed forest and streams, would like to return in the summer. Note: Sabbaday Brook Trail was not broken from Mt. Tripyramid to the Rt 112.
