We started out at 8:15am with only one person ahead of us. The lower portion of Stoney Brook trail was well packed. We were in snowshoes, but spikes would have been fine, we just didn't feel like stopping to change out of them. As we ascended, the snow got deeper and was not packed so we were grateful for snowshoes. Snow depth was anywhere from a few inches to above our knees. The wind was erasing all our tracks, but the trail is easy to follow.
Once we were above treeline, the granite is covered with thick ice which is hidden in places due to snow. Care is needed on a few spots to avoid sliding. The snow along the Carter-Moriah trail is deeper and there is no monorail and it is not packed.
The last push up the Carter Moriah trail right before the summit is totally unpacked. We managed to get up in snowshoes but it was more of a gymnastic event.
Winds were fierce today- 50mph to 70mph so we didn't stay on the summit long and hung onto friendly trees so as to not blow off. |
