***The Forest Service has closed all of Mt. Tecumseh due to construction at the ski area, effective October 18.***
The closure covers all trails on Mt. Tecumseh, even t UIhe Tripoli side (which is a mile or more away from the construction).
This closure was not disclosed in the Forest Service's public comment information this summer.
The closure is not posted on the White Mountain National Forest Alerts & Notices page.
If you call the number on the posted closure at the trailhead, you go directly to voicemail that states the person is on leave and will be returning October 10 (1.5 weeks ago). The posted closure threatens a $5,000 fine and 6 months prison.
Being that this is one of the nicest stretches of fall weather in years and that there is no notice posted online, it was no surprise that hikers were streaming into the parking lot. Many had driven hours to hike Tecumseh, and were angry to discover this surprise closure. Others apparently defied the order and hiked anyway.
I eventually tracked down a Forest Service representative by phone, who stated they might reopen the trail tomorrow, but don't know yet.
***Update*** The Forest Service has apparently reopened the trails as of 12 noon Saturday |
