The trail was in excellent condition - packed snow. I don't own snowshoes (yet) and the Hillsounds were adequate all the way to the summit. There were minimal drifts or iced sections that overwhelmed my traction. I left less than 5 good post holes behind me and I feel bad for each one - sorry. There were also 4 xc skiers behind me on the mountain that day.
This was an exhausting trip for me and I don't get tired easily. It started snowing right away (wasn't scheduled to snow until I was finishing) but I was able to hike from rt 3 to the summit via Garfield Trail 12.4 miles and back in 5 hours (7:30am to 12:30pm). The snow was constant all day though so I finished pretty damn cold and wet with no impressive photos to show off. The wind was calm all day until the absolute summit where it kicked up intensity but I didn't stick around long to soak that in too. Snow continued the remainder of the day once I was off the mountain. |
