We decided to do the Wildcats after seeing reports that 2 hikers had broken trail on Wednesday. However, high winds had blown most of the snow over the tracks on Wildcat Ridge trail so a new trail needed to be broken. 19 Mile trail was well broken out but not fully consolidated so snowshoes highly recommended. Lots of drifting in the notch. Mostly loose snow with hard packed wind scoured areas. Trail across slide was in good shape. Winds were minimal except in Carter Notch. Beautiful views of the Presidentials all along the ridge. We were too tired to retrace our steps as we had originally planned so hiked down the ski slopes then hoofed it back along Rt 16 to our car. Snowshoes start to finish. |
