Comments
Comments: We began our hike at 4:30am - Ammonoosuc was a packed sidewalk. If you start this trail later in the day this week, however, temperatures will likely be above freezing, so pack snowshoes for a potentially soft trail.

Pick your own path up Monroe. Today, an ice ax for Monroe would not have been overkill, and we were grateful for our mountaineering full crampons.

We used crampons on all trails above treeline today. Between Washington and Jefferson, the path began to soften a bit and we saw a few hikers switch to snowshoes. As I am more comfortable using crampons in "no fall" snowfield areas, we stuck with crampons.

Folks have packed out a nice Jewell shortcut from Gulfside by the trailsign for the spring - take that to go down/up Jewell if you are doing Jefferson. It'll save you some elevation gain and mileage.

The day was warm when we headed down Jewell, so we switched to snowshoes a bit above treeline. Jewell and its shortcut is nicely packed - thanks to the trail breakers!

It was the warmest day I have ever spent above treeline in the Whites. We lounged on Washington like it was summer. Gorgeous and far-reaching views in all directions.

Saw many friendly and familiar faces on Jefferson. Lefty, Whitney, and Denise are a few - nice to see you today!

Thanks to John as always for a wonderful hike.

Alex will have a trip report on her blog by Thursday.
