Very pleasant wind assisted walk up the Polecat. Once on the ridge trail I estimate that there is 6" of snow with a breakable crust and then another 6" of powder over that. The snow has drifted about half way up the obs platform. The worst drifting is on the East side of D. I did not mind too much as I was descending except that on the steeps going down D the drifts were not well adhered to the crust beneath so the snow and I would avalanche down. Scary. From the low point between D and C my estimate is that I could walk at a pretty much normal pace through the 6" of powder as long as the crust held. That would be roughly half the distance. Another quarter was on top of solid wind blown crust - easy walking - and the other quarter wallowing in drifts some of which were knee deep - slow work. Some of those was on the steeps on C naturally. Thanks to the drifts I also went on an unintentional bushwhack. White blazes on snow covered trees are not easy to discern.
Maybe two dozen of those pesky skiers on the Polecat. The rest have a job or were discouraged with the single digit temps and the winds |
