One rolled up 1/4 inch gray pad was found along side the trail. Since it was there on our way down we picked it up and left it at the Highland Center. |

A cold windy day requiring full winter gear to reach the summit. As indicated by the Highland Center staff the Webster Jackson trail was packed out to Jackson’s summit – snowshoes not needed. Due to the size of our AMC group we divided into three groups: one went to Pierce and the other two intended to reach Jackson and Webster taking left and right turns at the fork respectively. The Jackson Webster group layered up and put on goggles & facemasks just before the summit. The last tenth of a mile was steep in places and barely doable with spikes - crampons would have been better. Very cold and windy on the summit – wind gusts attempting to push you about. We attempted to follow the Webster Cliff trail to Mt. Webster but soon ran into deep drifts with no evidence of a packed down trail. We decided to return the way we came. The Webster Jackson group ran into deep drifts after Mt. Webster that slowed their progress towards Jackson but eventually did summit Jackson and returned to the Highland Center several hours later than the other groups. Useful hint for the day: use a toe warmer stuck to the back of your smart phone to keep it alive in cold temperatures. |
