Comments
Comments: Our original goal had been to hit both North Twin and South Twin -- but the amount of trail-breaking required on the North Twin Trail, especially the final mile or so before North Twin, put us a bit behind schedule. Once we reached North Twin, we figured that the final mile or so to South Twin would require more time than we had, especially with the deep drifts up high.

Quite simply, there's a bit of snow up there, in particular from earlier in the week, drifted by the high winds.

With that in mind, conditions are perfect for snowshoeing -- so much better than last year.

More information: herd path from Little River Road to Haystack Road, Haystack Road to North Twin Trail trailhead, and North Twin Trail (with water crossing bypasses) to Fire Warden's Trail turnoff is packed powder, with 3-4 inches of new snow broken by a skier. Remainder of North Twin Trail was unbroken with 6-8 inches of new snow increasing to about a foot higher up with a number of deeper drifts for the last half mile or so.

For that last half mile to the summit, there was not even a faint outline of a track from the weekend, and with the heavy, dense snow coverage, everything looked like a trail corridor, so we spent some time making sure that we left just one track to the summit for others to follow.

Excellent dry powder for glissading on the way down.

It was a great day to be out.
