Comments
Comments: Read Lucky Laura's W-P report before heading out in the morning and were duly warned of difficult conditions. We were not disappointed. It was a hard day.

All started well as Helle, Georg and I arrived at Pine Bend TH to find it packed down by a group of snowshoers from the day before. However, it did not long take before it was clear that whatever team had headed out the day before it had been reduced to a single person. But still a pretty good help.

Halfway up the steep section in the ravine Georg broke his snowshoes. We considered aborting the hike but were able to make repairs and continued. Focused on monitoring the effectiveness of the repair we continued to follow the tracks until suddenly they stopped. Clearly the person from the day before had turned around. We hadn't paid much attention but were clearly not on the trail and could not easily spot the left turn where the trail proceeds with the steep angled traverse. After some debate we decided to proceed up the ravine in the direction of Scaur Peak. Very heavy going in 12" heavy snow - sometimes more. However, we made it to the herd path leading to Scaur Peak and quickly connected with Pine Bend again. Easier from hereon with consolidated trial underneath the new snow measuring 4-10" (flat sections relatively easy, steep sections very difficult).

Our tracks may meander here and there but are good from the Scaur Ridge tr. jct to the Middle Tripyramid peak.

Upon our return we decided to continue down the proper trail. Lost the trail once but quickly recovered. Going down this way was okay but it was clear that there was so much snow that it would not have been much easier going up that way than continuing up the ravine as we did. Next group/person up there will have a choice at the point where our tracks merge. Not easy to say which route might be the easier. Flip a coin. Note: we looked very carefully again at the left turn in the ravine. In conditions like today it is very difficult to spot. Basically, when the blazes stop - make the turn.

Met a back-country skier just below the North summit as we were heading down. He was going to ski down the North Slide. Wouhh.
