6 of us from Denmark (Me.) Mtn. Hikers made this peak in unbroken snow around 8" deep mostly. First half of hike to the "switchbacks" was relatively easy then it gets surprisingly steep for a mile or so with a few underlying icy patches. We all had and required the MSR type snowshoes with big teeth and spikes except one of us who had the type with just the toe spikes, he had to switch to microspikes. The steep uphills were just at the limit of what aggressive snowshoes would grip. We arrive at the junction thinking it was the summit, but we were wrong. We went looking maybe 0.4 mile down the ridge trail but never did find the true summit which was only 30 ft. higher anyway. For a 2300 ft. gain, this mtn was tough and time consuming. We finished in the dark. |
