from where i parked i headed straight into the woods at the peak shifting a bit north to avoid steeper looking woods to the south. the going was open with 2-3 inches of powder snow over leaves which made for slippery footing. powder became wet snow by late morning. i soon hit steeper climbing near a boundary line and went straight up hitting a series of open ledges (some crusty ice) with nice views to the sandwich range, moats, presidentials, kearsarge, etc. here i noted a flagged path that led up to the summit of dundee hill. the path wasn't obvious leaving towards east peak so i bushwhacked down to the col where i picked the trail back up. i will note there is a house on the northeast side of dundee and the col is very close to edgcomb mountain road which leads to another house high on the east peak. back on the trail i was able to mostly follow it before losing it near the east peak and i bushwhacked up to the highpoint. a little bit of spruce up around the east peak. while poking around the summit area before heading down i again found the trail and a junction with signs including one declaring a ledgy bump as edgecomb mountain (this point is a couple minutes from the true highpoint). trails left both northeast (unnamed) and north (edgecomb trail) along with the trail back to dundee hill. i followed the trail back with better luck for the most part, though i still very much approximated a route on the climb back up dundee hill. i then descended on my footprints back to gulf road. as has often been the case hiking in this part of the state i started bushwhacking then found trails farther up the mountain. the trails mentioned above likely come up from brownfield road or a side road there of, but i really can't say for sure. it may also be possible to get up closer to the peaks using edgecomb road, but parking could be an issue (it may also be private). the ledges west of the summit of dundee hill are definitely the highlight of the route i used today. |
