| Water Crossing Notes: |
I crossed Cascade Brook five times; twice going up, three times coming down. The water is very high and the crossing was challenging. I did not find any rock hopping routes. I used areas of open shallow water. I walked through 6-8' deep running water, but I had the boots to do so without getting wet. |

| Comments: |
I hiked up to Kinsman Pond Shelter to try out some new gear and stayed the night. There is lots of water. water water water. I used fully waterproof mountaineering boots, and my feet stayed warm and dry. Snow was 6-10' deep. Lots of water still running right under the surface of the snow.
I did not use any traction. I put on microspikes once on my way up at the AMC lodge at Lonesome Lake when I saw others with them on. I took them off very quickly. They were accumulating huge balls of snow/ice and pretty much useless. I found that I was getting pretty good traction with just bare boots.
An ice axe would have been the most useful thing I didn't have with.
I saw some folks in hiking shoes with microspikes. Their feet were soaked and very cold. There is more than just microspikes to winter hiking. Yikes. |
