Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Thursday, December 1, 2016
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Did not see the small parking area on the S side of the road that was there and in use nine years ago, so we parked along the N side of Pleasant Valley Rd, a bit W of the last house on the road.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The two crossings were rock hoppable.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The trail from Heath's gate to the Kilkenney Ridge Tr appears to be being maintained (no blowdowns to clear), and currently in use enough that the trodden path is easily followable without need for the few faint old yellow blazes remaining. We cleared several small blowdowns N of the Kilkenny Ridge Tr junction, but one too big for our saw remains. At the Kilkenny Ridge Tr junction the sign now says "Trail not Maintained," nine years ago I recall it said "Trail Closed."

Comments
Comments: Old Man and the Saw, Mayor and I had a great day out in the wet woods, and we even saw some blue sky briefly on the way down. It never rained, but parts of the trail were a running water bed, and there were plenty of rain droplets on spruce and brush to be brushed off, so I at least was fairly wet from head to toe, but not cold enough to have added any rain gear or layers, by the end of the hike. We wore spikes above about 3200' where consist grey ice started, and they helped a little bit with the under 6" of mushy snow above about 3700'.
