Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The lot was full at 8am, rather surprisingly. Plenty of room to park alongside the road though without blocking traffic. One or two cars had to park just before the bridge.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Ice - Black, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Ice - Blue, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Bypassed the first 2 crossings of Little River on the well-worn herd path. The final crossing was tricky due to a coating of black ice on many of the rocks. I found a way across about 100ft upstream using some logs, but those were also icy and took care. Many others found their way across but despite fairly low water levels it is not a trivial crossing. I miss the giant log that made this crossing far easier. The minor tributary crossings were all easily handled, but again watch for black ice.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Pretty good shape overall. A few stopovers and leaners on the herd path between the crossings. Evidence of a fair bit of fairly recent blowdown work up high, while a few step overs remain they are all limbed and pose little issue. A few small pines are broken but frozen into the ground in the trail, maybe these will thaw and can be removed before winter sets in, we will see what Mother Nature decides.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw a few all managing just fine.

Comments
Comments: A nice almost-winter hike of the Twins. The lot was busy, but there didn't seem to be that many of them on the trail. Snow depth ranged from a light dusting at the trailhead to about 1" up high. A couple stretches of ice around 3300' and 4000', but I was able to bare boot up just fine. I did use beater spikes for a short stretch on the way down, and others used them for much longer. I probably should have used them more. Temps were just under freezing at the top, with some decent wind gusts, and the skies were clear and sunny. It was a pleasure to finally chat with and even hike a while with Sunshine, Bobcat, and their super trail dog Pemi after several years of running into each other here and there.
