Comments
Comments: Did an out-and-back from Gale River, chilly 21 degrees at the start - first signs of a light dusting of snow started almost a mile in, completely covered the trail maybe around shortly after the end of the relocated section, and increased to a few inches by the junction with Garfield Ridge trail - I put rock-micro's on about a half mile below the junction and kept them on until back at the same place, some people might have been able to get by without for a bit longer but I felt safer and could hike faster - I also had sharper spikes with me but never thought about switching to them. Not too much ice to speak of but the snow and rime melting off the trees added some crunchiness in places. Variety of conditions up to Galehead and to the Twins and back - a lot of packed snow from the weekend with small frozen postholes in places, some slippery slushiness especially in sunny places in the afternoon, and even some frozen crunchier small drifts between North and South Twin. No fresh drifting but the snow has filled in a lot of the cracks above 4400-4500', no need for snowshoes yet but hopefully soon, in general no more than a foot of snow up high. Heading down South Twin to the hut was a bit tedious, especially when the snow thinned and softened in the afternoon and the larger boulders needed to be navigated around, but slow and steady got the job done. Great weather and fantastic views up high, saw five other people and one other dog all enjoying the day - it's definitely looking wintry up high! - definitely more snow today than there was on our SSW hike of these last winter. Happy to have spent another lovely day in the woods with Hannah!
