Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: from wilsons mills we drove in parmachenee road turning left on what is signed as grant road though the map i looked at calls in abbott brook road. we followed this road to hell gate and parked on its shoulder just north of the suspension bridge of the dead diamond river. this left us a short bushwhack down to dead diamond road to pick up the bridge. dead diamond road is gated making the bushwhack start more practical.

Comments
Comments: the short bushwhack to the bridge was very quick in open woods. cool suspension bridge across the river to the "hell gate hilton". across the field we picked up the trail to hell gate and lamb valley ponds. the trail was in nice shape, but quite slippery owing to it being wet with leaf cover. the trail forked and we followed the branch to hell gate pond. pretty wet near the pond which is a cool spot. we doubled back a bit and went around the pond to the east finding interesting open evergreen forest before steeper climbing and mixed woods ranging from open hard woods to scrappy spruce and blowdown to the recognized highpoint. from the summit we took a line down to lamb valley where we ended up near the northern most little pond after a steep drop in mostly open woods. here we crossed the lamb valley road and continued in open woods up to lamb valley brook peak. a few steep spots then long stretches of good woods. on the ascent we hit one big cut that was sort of unfortunate, but moved south to avoid another one closer to the summit. this kept us in decent woods up to the recognized highpoint. descending we stayed on the south side of the ridge back down to lamb valley road and missed all the cuts and enjoyed good woods the whole way. we followed the road to its junction with lamb valley pond trail where we made a quick visit to the pond which is very nice. from there we followed the trail back out.
