Large, paved parking lot with a clean, wooden structure outhouse. Always a plus! |

|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
Several water crossings. They can be done with rock hopping. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
The trail has very few blazes. We didn't have too much trouble following the trail, but ran into some other solo hikers who were looking for confirmation that they were headed in the right direction and found the lack of markings a bit unnerving. |
|
| Dog-Related Notes: |
We saw at least one retriever-sized dog. |
|
| Bugs: |
We ran into some mosquitoes and gnats but they were not too bad. No black flies, which was great. |

| Comments: |
The bottom third of the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail was very muddy. The rest of the trail varied from dry to wet, depending on where the water from the many streams was flowing. The waterfalls and pools along this trail are stunning, and the short spur path to the side by side waterfalls is a must do. Apparently you can even swim in the pool at the base of those falls (though we were told by a guy who had just gotten out of the water that it was numbingly cold, even at this time of year.) The upper half of the trail is quite steep and the last .8 miles is a lot of bare rock that requires some scrambling. Temperatures were great. It was humid in the forested part of the trail but the air dried out as we got out of the trees. Visibility was 100 miles (!) according to the weather report in the Lake of the Clouds hut, and it was amazing to see Mt. Washington so clearly and so close. |
