Did this one with the Random Group of Hikers. Was able to bare boot to the Avalon Trail/A-Z Trail Junction and we put our spikes on there, and keep them on until we returned to the same spot. Went up Avalon Trail towards Field - steep sections were easy to manage even in just spikes - the top layer of the ice was soft enough for the spikes to dig in nicely. There are a few sections along the way that will make you think that its time to take your spikes off - don't be fooled. Right around the next turn will be more ice. The monorail is pretty stable - only post holed once. It started to sprinkle when we were at Willey and kept at it until we were done. There was some rain scheduled for later in the afternoon so it may impact the ice. Only saw five people the whole day - one we knew (Joan) and four we didn't (these four bare booted the whole way - they said they liked the adventure but were lucky they didn't get hurt). |
