| Comments: |
Snow and ice started at around 2500' and continued from there all the way to Middle Tripyramid. Hiking up we were able to use microspikes. At Middle Tripyramid we switched over to Hillsound Trail Crampons. Later in the day the ice had softened up and in a lot of areas had formed a layer of soft, greasy slush. This slush layer was thick enough to cause problems with microspikes getting a good 'bite'. The longer teeth on the crampons didn't have this issue. We wore them all the way down to 2500' when they became more of a hindrance than help.
With the warmer weather the snow/ice is rapidly retreating but it will still present in the steeps for another week or so. |
