i first visited the site of the madame sherri castle a short walk in from the trailhead then got on the ann stokes loop following the right branch to indian pond. good signage at junctions, but the trail is lighly marked. lots of slippery leaves on the climb up from the pond to the mine ledge spur on the w-m trail. little to no markings, but the corridor is generally easy to follow. i continued straight to the summit area of wantastiquet continuing past the communications tower to a second bump which had a wide open view down to brattleboro and into vermont. very nice spot. i then poked around on some high bumps and did a short bushwhack up to the higpoint of the mountain which is to the southeast end of the peak. the trail passes under it before dropping and rising to the communications tower. one bump seemed to gel with the usgs and has a small cairn as some debris from an old structure nearby. a cool view to mine ledge nearby as well. another bump that feels about as high is to the nw and has two old communcations antennas on it and a small cairn. back on the trail i went to mine ledge which is a pretty awesome cliff with multiple views including a nice one out to monadnock. once back at indian pond i followed ann stokes loop over east hill and to the northern branch of daniels mountain loop trail. trails in this area are much better marked with the daniels loop trail being very well marked on its climb to the summit. one nice viewpoint to wantastiquet on the way. i doubled back and follwed to the ann stokes loop back to the parking area. some very nice hiking on peaks that feel much taller than the actually are. |
