Comments
Comments: This was a great hike! The weather turned out to be great, even though there was a little cloud cover. We hiked the Osceola teail from Tripoli Rd. The lot had 5 cars at 8:30 am. For a 4000 footer, you can make pretty good time up the mountain. The trail starts with some pretty rockey terrain, which lets up but then turns to some decent elevation gain for the second half. There were a couple nice views on the way up, including a great look-over of Waterville Valley. The summit is great. Beuatiful South facing views, including views of the tripyramiids and Chocuroa. We met a handful of people atthe summit - including one woman who had just summitted her first 4000 footer - way to go! The descent was pretty quick for the first half. The last 3/4 mile or so of the decent gets very technical because of all of the rocks. It's not real steep or anything, but use caution with everystep for good footing. I was glad I had boots with a stiff sole and good ankle support. When we got back to the lot, the cars were spillling out into Tripoli Rd. Better off doing this one early to avoid the crowds.
Overall, this was a great day in the Whites. I recommend this one to anyone who hasn't done it yet. We didnb't do the cross-over to East Osceola, but that's OK. I hear there is no view fm that summit anyway.
