| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Took 34B off the Franconia Parkway, and parked near the aerial tramway. The trailhead was just to the left of the building, down a dirt road. |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
|
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
One water crossing right before the end of the hike, a few tenths of a mile from the trailhead of Hi-Cannon. Take care to cross this small cascading brook: the rocks are quite slippery. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Mud and standing water made some sections hard to pass, though previous hikers left signs of their successful attempts at avoiding them. Some blowdowns and storm damage, but no seriously obstructed areas of concern. |
|
| Dog-Related Notes: |
Saw a few canine companions on our way up, so the trail must be able to accommodate them. |
|
| Bugs: |
IF you stopped at all, the insects began to catch up. But the summit and the Profile Clearing were bug-free, and slight rain on the hike down kept them away, as well. |

When asked why my favorite New Hampshire ski resort is Cannon, I usually say because Cannon has such a wild, natural feel to it. My first hike up it simply confirmed my impression of Cannon Mountain. The hike up was incredible; falling streams, imposing boulders, and winding trails of loose gravel. The hike has no easy beginning; once you start, you're gaining feet fast. (4,180 feet in 2.1 miles!) Profile Clearing was a gem; easily one of the best sites in the Whites. Pay your respects to the Old Man, and remember this as you traverse Cannon:
"Men hang out signs indicative of their respective trades;
Shoe makers hang out a giant shoe;
Jewelers a monster watch, and the dentist hangs out a gold tooth;
But up in the mountains of New Hampshire,
God Almighty has hung out a sign to show
That there He makes men." -- Daniel Webster |
