Up Washington via Lion Head & return by Boott Spur, RGOH party of 10. Tuckerman well tracked, light traction to Lion. We ascended Lion with microspikes & ice axes without much trouble (descending the same would be hairy--recommend crampons & maybe rope--no fixed rope currently in place). Little ice up Lion, loose to firm steps. Tuckerman up cone a mixture of sunbaked wind slab, loose snow, drifts of varying stability, light ice patches, bare rock. Pretty well packed out. Ascent to Boott Spur from Lawn about the same, less well packed. Descent of Boott Spur very bony, blasted to rock with occasional stretches of drift and wind slab with spotty ice. Light traction sufficient with care. We had trouble locating the trail where it 1st enters the trees. Snow very deep thereabouts, right to top of trail canopy & higher. Lost it several times. Lost it again at the easternmost barren knob before full treeline. Gave up messing with it and just bushed it down <0.4 mi to Shelburne Ski Trail. Gnarly with spruce traps but a tolerable hell for that short a distance. Down a bit then back to Tucks via a ski crossover. |
