Comments
Comments: Snowshoes car to car today, broke trail all the way up - started with 4-6" down low, good track but still hit the occasional rock under the snow - occasional foot deep drifts started about halfway up. The ice flows a bit further up had less snow over them but weren't rock hard, easily passed with a bit of care. The last half mile before the junction (starting just after where the trail gets steep) was very drifted with difficult trail breaking, many knee deep drifts on the steeper sections made for slow going to the junction. Some drifts on Carriage Road to treeline but nothing like on Glencliff and many were partially wind hard packed so we didn't sink all the way down. Some wind blown boiler plate ice the last tenth to the summit, didn't bother to switch to other traction for such a small section and snowshoes were more than adequate. The hike down was uneventful until the last 0.6-0.7 or so, found ski and sled tracks had completely obliterated my track from this morning and pushed all the snow off the trail :( Much more hard packed but still stayed in snowshoes back to the car. No signs of other trails seeing any use since the storm. These trails are broken out but definitely not consolidated so please wear snowshoes!! - no way I would have made it wearing anything else and this area of the Whites got the least amount of snow on Tuesday, can't imagine how deep it will be on other trails. Challenging day but very rewarding, didn't see a soul and spectacular views and blue sky above treeline.
