Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, January 25, 2015
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of room at Livermore. There were quite a few cars mostly (I would guess) for skiers.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Minor drainages still open; just step/jump over.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There is a paper sign up the new section of Greeley Pond from where it diverges from the old, and another for Timber Camp. There was a gnarly crawl under blowdown on the unofficial trail above Timber Camp. Timber Camp is not paint blazed but easy to follow. The unofficial extension is brushy in places and has a counter-intuitive right turn and trend down an old skid road near its beginning, but once past this it's easy enough to follow to the view. I went further just to see what was there.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Most of the trails were easy for Pepper. He was leashed for Livermore to keep him off the groomed trail as I snowshoed off to its side, but we did see skiers with dogs on the groomed section. The unofficial extension of Timber Camp was unbroken so it was deep for him following in my snowshoe tracks. There were some open wet spots too where paws could get wet but I kept him to the side. Goodrich Rock ladder is not dog friendly at all; it could be quite dangerous. Pepper has learned to hold a position on each rung and then jump on command to the next, so I can spot/guide him safely, but this ladder's rungs are spaced just perfect for him, and he is small and easy to guide.

Comments
Comments: As part of our powderpuff hiking this winter, Pepper and I had fun all by ourselves on these trails. There are some nice views, especially those of the Osceola ledges. Livermore was groomed for skiers so I snowshoed off to the side. Greeley Ponds was groomed, although it did have what looked like a single ski track part way up it and then back down. It was rough and crusty; it could be barebooted. MSR Evo Ascents made it easier to go up both Goodrich Rock and Timber Camp, and were absolutely essential in the Timber Camp unofficial extension. On Goodrich Rock it was a tight crawl through the rock cave in the boulders mini loop for me; piece of cake for Pepper. The Goodrich Rock ladder rungs had just some powdery snow on them which I brushed off so they were barebootable. But there is ice on a slope on the Rock where the ladder top accesses it, so I put on spikes just for the ladder and rock section. I could have used my snowshoes albeit clumsily if I wasn't spotting Pepper.
