Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The many small drainages could be jumped, although one might have to go or downstream a short ways. The ice on them just isn't thick enough yet to trust walking on it.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There were several large branch complexes on the trail heading up to the HOL from the west. On the east side the beaver ponds have flooded short pieces of the current trail, but it easy to get around that. The beavers looked to have abandoned the upper ponds, but are very active in the lower one. More below. All signs in place.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Pepper enjoyed this trail; it had lots of interesting smells. There is open water, some with thin ice, so it would be easy for a dog to get the feet wet. Right not that is no problem, but after some fresh snow it could lead to snow/ice balling up on the paws

Comments
Comments: While Carr Mtn's hike was a wintry one, by the time we got to this one the sun was out and temps were milder. It makes for a pleasant woods walk. The trail was easy to follow mostly, but when the trail swung left to get away from sections flooded some time ago, it went a ways before running into what appeared to be a 90 degree turn to the left to follow yellow blazes and saplings cuts. There were a few bog bridges piled to the side as well. But after a short walk on it I decided it was a boundary line of some sort and returned to where I had turned left. After a short walk using the direction of the trail I hit new paint blazes and then we were set. On the hike back I found myself on the old trail with old paint blazes, with Pepper up the hill a bit on the re-route. Given the frozen conditions I could continue on the old trail with its extensive bog bridges until it ended in a pile of debris, but a short cut over took me to the trail where Pepper waited for me.

We didn't see any other hikers all day, nor hunters. The solitude in the mostly open woods was wonderful Three Ponds trail off Hubbard Brook looked like no one had been on it in awhile.
