Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Cascade Brook crossings doable if a bit tricky today. I did rock hops; Pepper did some wading. All other crossings just rock steps.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: All signs in place, no blowdowns and no significant brushiness. Cascade Basin in good shape. Kinsman Pond in its upper sections below the pond, is often a brook bed. Fishing Jimmy has needle/leaf/mud filled pockets. Cascade Brook in great shape except for some soft mud just up from I-93.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: The trails were easy for Pepper; the wet ledges were a piece of cake, the crossings weren't much of a problem. I put a soft shell on him when the light & scattered showers came. That worked great until the showers became real rain with occasional snow pellets up high on our return hike, and he got somewhat wet under it then. What he really needed was a hat, but I've never seen a dog hat. The weather had a plus, we had lots of solitude.

Comments
Comments: We made this hike up as we went, keeping an eye on the weather. We started up Cascade Basin, the crossings were doable so we kept on going. The cascades along Basin and Kinsman Pond were flowing nicely. The scattered showers (mostly wet, some snow pellets) were no problem until around 1, when they became rain and pretty much stayed that way through 3. We were pretty soaked in our soft shells, but still warm.

This hike had lots of wet ledges, in upper Kisnman Pond, Kinsman Ridge and Fishing Jimmy, but the rock crystals are rather rough and the grip was pretty good. But I'd hate to be on them when there was any icing, frost or snow pellets. Cascade Brook in contrast, was smooth, fast with modest slopes; a fun hike down even in the rain. I've never been fond of Fishing Jimmy and today it was a particular pain in the bass.

We didn't see anyone until the shelter, then a couple on the ridge and a few on Fishing Jimmy and Cascade Brook.

I've never been fond of Fishing Jimmy, and today it was even less
