we started up five summers trail which follows a nice road with decent footing. a little wet due to some rain early. we started our bushwhack before the trail makes a hard turn east to a second crossing of cherry brook on a line directly at the summit. noted some old woods roads and skidder trails along the way through the open woods to the recognized highpoint. from there we followed the ridgeline towards lucias lookout. there were a couple easily navigated steep drops and small cliffs with continued open woods. before the final ascent of lucias we crossed over a snowmobile trail then into very nice woods up to the greenway. multiple nice outlooks in this area. some of the rock and ledge headed south on the greenway was pretty greasy, but soon we were into leaf filled trail down to the moose lookout campsite. we discovered the campsite wasn't quite where we though it would be looking at maps so were a bit farther away from south lucias than we thought. it was still a fairly short and nice bushwhack from the campsite up to the eastern bump of south lucias which is the recognized highpoint. we then headed to the west bump which has the spot elevation on usgs maps and the altimeters we had both said it was higher by about 8 feet. though far from precision instruments i would trust that much of a difference to mean the west bump is the higher one. from there we bushwhacked back around the east bump and down to the greenway. great trail from there to kittredge hill with just enough leaf cover to necessitate some care in rockier sections. highpoint of kittredge is just off the trail to the east. from there back to the parking area the trails were in nice shape and generally dry.
nice day for this hike. a bit damp and foggy to start, but it cleared out by noon with a great breeze and good views from the various points on lucias lookout. lots of great woods and enjoyable bushwhacking. thanks to amy for a good hike.
