Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Extremely dismaying! I observed numerous large(10+ individuals)groups of college (was told Harvard) students (staying at lodges) ascending & descending yards off the designated trails with utter disregard for fragile alpine plants. Many wore light sneakers, justifying in their minds I suppose) the destruction they were causing. Others wore boots, the net effect as viewed from the summit of numbers of flora tramplers was to instigate an off-trail free-for-all up and down for many tens of hikers, including a large body of boy scouts. The trails above tree line at the Moosilauke summit in all directions show so much wear across plant life that some adult hikers I informed of the rules thought that that was the trail. Now is the time for some large bright unmistakable graphic signage at the tree line, and some minimum messaging above it, as the non-optional rule to stay on designated trail. People with inappropriate footwear should turn back.
