Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, September 1, 2014
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: There is room for two or three vehicles on the side of Hardy Country Road near the area being logged, but be mindful that this logging is an ongoing operation.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: lots of crossings, but, all rock-hoppable
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Current logging has obliterated the first 50-60 feet of the trailhead, and logging equipment currently sits where, until recently, the original parking area existed. Until a new trailhead is created, one can access the trail by walking to the immediate left of the logged area and heading directly toward Dane Brook, about 40-50 feet away -- you'll see the trail corridor there at the brook crossing. [Do NOT follow the logging road from this area -- it diverges from the trail.]
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: a reasonable amount of water - I refilled once in the streams.
Bugs
Bugs: occasional mosquitoes near the streams
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: When I got back to my car, I noticed a lot of writing in the road, a small cairn near my car, and a big note on my windshield that a couple girls were lost and needed help finding their way out... but they soon appeared in a jeep driven by a friend they were able to call.... they traversed from the AMC lodge and were confused and trying to find Sculptured Rocks after they changed their plans to end at Bear Mtn.... not clear how they told their friend in the jeep to find them?????

Comments
Comments: Very fun trail-bagging north of Mt Cardigan. Trails were much easier to follow than I was anticipating!!!! Thanks trail maintainers!!!!

This was my second attempt to actually hike the Carter Gibbs Trail.

The recent relocation of the trail takes it through/along some recently clear-cut/logged areas -- use caution when crossing these sections, as they're becoming a bit overgrown and the trail markings (cairns, wooden posts, yellow tape on trees) are not quite as obvious as they were a year ago.

My route: Carter Gibbs Tr to Oregon Mtn Tr to Mowglis Mountain. From there, I took the Elwell Trail - very cool trail - awesome views of Firescrew!!!! From there I went to the jct with Old Dicey Rd and continued on the Elwell Trail. Those sections of the Elwell Trail are very remote-feeling - awesome!!!! From there I continued on the Elwell Trail to each junction of the Welton Falls Trails (North and South) and I turned around at the powerline cut, about a mile west of Bear Mountain. On the way back, I went over Oregon Mtn.

Realistically, I didn't think I had time to go to Bear Mtn, but, I will go back and play in that area later.

Excellent views along the ledges and ridges - truly a special area... hopefully industrial energy plants won't fill those nearby ridges, but, the threat is very real.

At the end of the day, since I was right there, I took a quick dip in the extremely brisk Cockermouth River through the cavernous Sculptured Rocks - AWESOME way to cool the pricker rashes!!!!! 13.1 miles today.
