Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks North Moat Mountain, NH
Trails
Trails: Moat Mountain Trail, Red Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, July 25, 2014
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of room when we got there, which was well after 9. But it was overflowing and busy on our return, with cars parked all along the road, for the swimmers.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Rock or log steps; water levels were low.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Right not things are pretty good. Lower Moat lacks markings, and there are lots of side paths by swimmers, but if one just follows the road there's no problem. Red Rim across the ledges has enough paint on them to be easy to follow. Each trail had an eroding section which could use some waterbars. North Moat's waterbars are often hard filled; I couldn't scrape them out at all with my poles. All signs are in place.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Pepper had a good day due to the mild temps, breeze and low humidity. There's a fair amount of exposure to the sun on open ledges on this loop which on a hot/humid day could have made things pretty hot for him, but today he was fine. Down low there are streams for sip n dips, but the middle and upper sections lack any drainages/streams, so bring water. By going on a weekday, he pretty had the trails to himself.

Comments
Comments: The good news is the blueberries were plentiful and ripe on the Red Rim Trail. The bad news is I ate them all. Well, not really, there are way too many for that. Pepper didn't want to eat any and with the sun on him, I had to keep moving, but I still managed to gobble down several handfuls and grab others 2 or 3 at a time. We saw one hiker and one trail runner the whole day in the middle and upper sections, but on coming down to and through the Diana's Baths area we ran into a school full of kids and adults; indeed there was a school bus at the parking area along with all those cars. Although the views were hazy, it was a splendid day to take off from work and leisurely bag some lovely trails without the expected crowds. Thanks Pepper.
