| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Easy parking about 2-3 miles in on the dirt road. space for about 8 cars, however, this is also close to the round barn campsite, so weekend use may surge. |
| Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable |
| Recommended Equipment: |
| Water Crossing Notes: |
All were light & easy. |
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
One large blowdown very early on into the trail, which could be addressed quite easily due to the distance in. The entry to the trail was a bit overgrown too. |
| Dog-Related Notes: |
Only saw 1, a thru-hiking dog headed south. Didn't get her trail name. |
| Bugs: |
Yup. If you had exposed skin, it was targeted. I was mostly completely covered. The bugs backed off around 3,200' up. |
| Lost and Found: |
nada. |

What an amazing ridge, the Bigelows are! This is wild though - beware & be safe. Ran across a coyote 30' into the trail, and saw some minor signs of bear activity (not recent). The 2 mile approach to the Safford Brook Pond Tentsite was very gradual and appreciated with a heavy pack. I do think the trail was re-routed a bit, as the map didn't line up with the intersection point with Old Man's Head. I thought I would have hit that and then made my way down to the camp. However, Old Man's Head was about an hour's climb from the camp instead. Oh well, beautiful ridge, nice campsite; lots of Southbounders making their way down. This marks #76,77,78 on my NEHH list. Wish I could spend more time overlooking Flagstaff Lake! Gorgeous views all around from the two 4,000'ers. |
