Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Abol Stream and Katahdin Stream are wooden bridges. 2 other small rock hop crossings. Katahdin Stream bridge will be rebuilt this summer as there is a lot of lumber on site for that project.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: I am a member of the Maine A.T. Club and this is my section of trail that I maintain. It is about 5 miles long and starts at Abol Bridge on the Golden Road and extends north into Baxter State Park. Much of the trail is along the West Branch of the Penobscot River. The river is high right now from snowmelt and rain and is over flowing onto the trail in many places. Some sections I had to bushwack around as the water was up to 3 feet deep at the low spots near the river. The sections that I could walk on had many blowdowns. I cleared about 40 small blowdowns with a handsaw and will have about 30 big blowdowns to be cleared with my chainsaw in a few weeks.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: None
Bugs
Bugs: I had 1 mosquito land on my arm at a rest stop and it is no longer with us.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Found a few pieces of trash and 3 pennies on the trail.

Comments: Appalachian Trail - Abol Bridge to Baxter State Park

A good day for trail work with cloudy sky in the morning and sun and clouds after noon with temps from 50 to 65. I had the trail to myself today. Some of the low sections of the trail had water from the river flowing over the trail and leaving debris behind and in some areas the trail was totally cleaned of all debris. I saw 2 ducks on the river, 1 turtle on the trail and 1 dead trout on a bushwack, which was about 100 feet from the river. Weird to see a trout on dry land that far from water.
