| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Parked at the dirt lot at the end of the paved section of Birch Ave. Did not see evidence of the parking area described in the guide. |
| Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant |
| Recommended Equipment: |
| Water Crossing Notes: |
Crossing of Meadow Brook (where there was formerly a culvert) was easily done. |
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Several stepovers once past the gate, a trio of large trees down just past the wet section. The wet middle section was just that, wet. There are herd paths around some of the worst bits. The upper section toward the notch was brushy at times, then was in good shape all the way to the junction. |
| Dog-Related Notes: |
Saw a dog just as I started, and he came up, sniffed me, and proceeded to follow me for the next mile. He finally headed back home, after I repeatedly told him to. Nice dog though, just wanted to go for a hike I guess! |

| Comments: |
Took the southern approach to Albany Mountain, and was rewarded. Though the middle section was pretty nasty with mud and wetness, the lower and upper portions were great, the upper especially, though it is grown in. It had a nice wild feel to it. Met up with fellow red-liner Dan, who was doing an out and back from the north trailhead, so I offered to give him a ride back to his car from the south. Neither of us expected to see anyone, so it was fitting that it was another red-liner. A great morning in western Maine! |
