Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Tuesday, July 14, 2015
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Good parking lot, but former users left a little trash, which we picked up. The Chatham Trails Association takes good care of this place and some of it is on private property, hopefully folks will appreciate and respect this.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Very minor, the first one humorous. It is a tiny brook with a sing on its bridge reading "No Diving." A spur path on the Stone House trail leads one to a gorge, where there is a bridge for viewing the gorge.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Signage good, blazes good.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Provide water and watch out for those ledges!
Bugs
Bugs: A few skeeters.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: On the way back to the parking lot from the falls, someone had dropped a black tank top. I left it near the kiosk.

Comments
Comments: What a great place! The White Cairn Trail had one steep area, but doesn't take too long. Great views once you get up there. Looking out at Meader and the Baldies, I was glad I went to Meader the day before, because now they were shrouded in mist. We had a mixed bag of weather, sun, the threat of rain, and some actual rain. Spent many hours on this hike, due to the nice ledges and blueberries. Had a peaceful encounter with a spruce grouse, and the large group of young camp boys did as well, because I had a chance to hush them so they would not frighten the bird away. Councilors are doing a great job with these boys, good practice of woods etiquette. Stone House Trail had two nice surprises near the end - Rattlesnake Falls and Rattlesnake Gorge. The falls are reminiscent of Emerald Pool in color and temperature. We stuck our feet in, that was enough. The gorge is pretty. Coming out into the beautiful open fields at the end was nice. Thanks to the owners for allowing access and the CTA for their fine maintenance.
