Hiking Trail Conditions Report

Peaks South Crocker Mountain, Mt. Redington, ME
Trails
Trails: Caribou Valley Road, Appalachian Trail, herd path, logging roads
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, June 14, 2015
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked 3.9 miles down Caribou Valley Rd, in a parking area just before a gate before a metal bridge. I drive a Kia Rio, so if my ride can make it, pretty much anything else can. Only really sketchy bridge on the driveable part was near mile marker 2 and had a couple holes right through the wood. Drive with care.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The only crossings of note were on the logging roads from Redington and CVR (Caribou Valley Rd).
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: This part of the AT looked more wild than the parts of it in NH I've hiked, but nevertheless it was in great shape.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw two with their owner at the Crocker Cirque Campsite. Looked like they had a fun time!
Bugs
Bugs: They were a minor annoyance at times, but vicious in other places, such as Redington's summit.

Comments
Comments: I originally planned to bag Crocker Mtn. as well, but after getting cut up on the herd path, which in places was very narrow, overgrown, and laden with blowdowns and debris (I was wearing shorts instead of long pants), I decided to spare myself a new collection of leg cuts and call it at Redington. The AT to South Crocker was easy for the first mile, then quite steep after the Crocker Cirque (which was very nice and suiting). Excellent leg workout! Once at Redington's summit, I signed the register in the canister, took some pics, ate lunch, then headed down the logging road route to CVR, which I walked back to my car. 9.5 mi, 2,500 ft. gain.

#54 and 55 on the NE67 are down!
