River Pond Nature Trails (w/Katahdin views & aka The Classroom)
In trying to find a dog friendly, easy snowshoe/hike in the Millinocket area I found the River Pond Nature Trail which is off the Golden Road. I did not find this lovely set of easy trails listed in the Maine Mountain Guide or on internet sites. They may also be called The Classroom. The trail which is along the side of River Pond has wonderful views of Katahdin. The trails are accurately reflected on the Maine Mountain Guide Map 1 (Baxter Park) at F3 or F4. On that map, they are referred to as the KFM River Trail (stands for Katahdin Forest Management LLC). Based on old signs poking out of the snow, these trails may have been there since the mid 1990's. There is a pretty new kiosk sign at the parking lot.
