Peaks Mt. Abraham, ME
Trails
Trails: Road walk, Mt. Abraham Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Wednesday, November 19, 2014
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Road from town in pretty good shape, all things considered. The usual deep potholes due to heavy equipment, but compared to other backcountry roads in Maine, no worries.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Breakable Crust, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The two brook crossings after the parking area are not trivial. We wore microspikes because the hard crust required them, and they helped grip the partially ice-covered rocks.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The Firewarden's Trail had a fair share of major/minor blowdowns, but nothing that prevented travel. It has been recently blazed (blue) so routefinding wasn't difficult. In these early winter conditions, the most difficult section to figure out was immediately above treeline - the cairns there are small, and covered in snow/crust they we hard to spot.

Comments
Comments: Road walk for about 3/4 mile, then Fire Wardens Trail

The new camping spot has an outhouse and water source. The two brook crossings immediately after parking are not trivial. We found the best crossings to be slightly upstream from the washed-out bridges. The second crossing was more difficult than the first. Microspikes helped grip the slippery rocks. Microspikes needed top to bottom. See link below for map and tracks.

Great views above treeline of the Crockers & Reddington, Spaulding/Sugarloaf with one of the Bigelows visible beyond Sugarloaf, as well as Saddleback & the Horn.
