Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, October 19, 2014
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I parked at the small area across from the south end of the Miles Notch Trail on Hut Road, which I had to myself, as I did all three Trails. The Trail sign, described by the AMC Guide as "missing in 2011," has been restored, but it's the wrong one, giving distances from the north end, 6 miles to the north. So give the USFS an A for effort but F for execution on this. As for the Great Brook Trail, the "first gate" on Hut Road mentioned in the Guide was open and the .8-mile section of dirt road from there to the second, closed gate was in fine shape, drivable by any car.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant, Leaves - Significant/Slippery
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: One crossing of Great Brook and many smaller brooks, none very difficult.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: All three Trails are "lightly used," as the AMC Guide puts it, so were hard to follow in many places, with all the fallen leaves. That Miles Notch Tr. section, however, is not in the Wilderness, so it has plenty of blazes and was easy to follow. Not so the other two.
