Comments
Comments: The trail descriptions and maps that I ordered from the 4000 footer committee were extremely helpful. If like me you are not yet a big fan of bushwhacking, Redington is actually all right. The herd path is easy to follow if you pay attention. In most places the path is brown from dead evergreen needles while the surroundings are green with moss. It is brushy and tight in places so the dry day helped. Blowdowns were not difficult. Turn right onto the yellow blazed boundary cut, then left at a cairn where a view is opening up ahead on the cut. After passing an area that was logged and has smaller trees (and views), turn left onto the quite rough "jeep road." At the top of the hill at a cairn, go right onto the most civilized part of the herd path going up to Redington summit. Play hide and seek for the canister on the. Ack of one of many dead trees, on small path.

To return to my car I simply retraced my steps. Of course that meant read ending South Crocker and descending some steep part of the AT. But at least I knew where I was going and only had the half mile road walk at the end.
