Chemin Clearwater then: Sentier Frontaliers Trails #7, Boundary swath, SF trail #1, Petit Gosford Bypass, SF trail #1, SF trail #7 to Clearwater
Did a loop over Boundary, Cap Frontiere, and Gosford from the parking area below Clearwater Refuge in the Mont Gosford forest preserve on the Quebec side of the border with party of 8. There is a nominal fee to enter the reserve and use the roads and trails. There are campsites and cabins to rent there, too, although we did not stay there. The reserve offers a trail map (online or can be purchased at the welcome station http://www.montgosford.com/). Many of the trails follow old skid roads and border access trails. Some are in great shape, others are eroded. The trails are well marked with paint and plastic markers, with signs at intersections. There is one sharp turn on SF #7 just before a beaver dam but you'll see the markers after a little poking around. The boundary swath is easy to follow to Boundary Peak where there is a register. It's just after you pass the broken silver boundary monument (the only one between Boundary Peak and trail #7). After the marker climb steeply uphill and reach a cairn with the canister in the trees on the US side. Some creative person bootleg named Boundary Peak "Panther Peak" via a wooden sign. Not sure what the intention was there. Views would have been spectacular if weather had not socked us in. The boundary swath is a big moose shooting gallery on the Canada side with salt blocks and hunting blinds--beware during hunting season. |
