Conditions will have changes a bit given the rain on Saturday but this may have just consolidated some of the snow. Below junction with eagle crag loop an inch of new snow on top of hard packed base - some spots of ice under the snow, above the junction there was 4-6 inches of powder over the base with a few deeper drifts but no real worry about post holing. Once above tree line - from just before the featherbed a combination of sheet ice, frozen snow, drifted snow, and bare rock up to the summit. Boots OK below tree line but light traction needed to handle the ice. An amazing hike with beautiful clear blue skies and 100 mile views - easily one of my top 5 winter hikes. Only one hiker on trail since last storm though he didn't make it to tree line so I had untouched trails once up on the ridge. Had the summit to myself which is a change from all of the traffic in the summer. For those that don't get up to Acadia in winter definitely add it to your list. |
