Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Redington, South Crocker Mountain, Crocker Mountain, ME
Trails
Trails: Caribou Pond Road, logging roads, herd paths, Appalachian Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, February 24, 2014
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked at the entrance to Caribou Valley Road (aka Caribou Pond Road). Not much space - but it seems to be okay. Note: The access area to the AT on 16/27 was not plowed. As far as I could determine there is really nowhere to park. Very poor trail-head maintenance compared to New Hampshire.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The stream before Crocker tentsite is not bridged. A bit tricky but the water is low.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Several blowdowns - on the herd-path to Redington and on the AT. Worst is in the notch between the two Crocker peaks where a couple of large blowdowns are making trail-location more difficult.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Good trails for canines that can handle the unconsolidated trails. Watch out for snow-mobiles on Caribou Valley Road and the logging roads.

Comments
Comments: The logging roads are all used by snow-mobiles and the access to Redington herd path is easy. The herd path was not broken out - but it was easy enough to follow. I wanted to sign the register at the summit but all the pens are gone. Much to my dismay I discovered that the pen I usually have in my pack had also gone walkabout - otherwise, I would have left it in the canister. Perhaps a kind person can bring some extras on his/her next visit to this peak.
Last entry on the register was from 1-19.
The AT was broken out from Caribou Valley Road to just before the tentsite - but not beyond. Deep, unconsolidated snow until about 200 yards before Crocker Mtn. summit where a hiker coming up from 16/27 had turned around. At least that was 200 yards I did not have to break out.
Note: The AT in the other direction (towards Sugarloaf and Spaulding) is not broken out.
