A nice clear blue day today, picked hike given expcted cold temps and winds and wasn't disappointed. Trail up to summit ledges had from 1-3 inches of fresh powder over a nice packed powder base, easy going. Summit ledges were largely ice covered with some snow in spots with occasional drifts, light traction really helpful to handle the ice you'd have to watch steps otherwise; a good stretch of .5 miles above treeline. Temps about zero up top and steady 25-30 MPH with the occasional higher gusts. Given temps and wind face protection and goggle a must today. Nice clear blue skies meant great views today; winds had covered tracks in sections of trail that were snow until back below treeline. Met only two other hikers with a pair of canines. |
